Adventures in Minimum Wage...with skilz!

Remember that from last semester? Yeah. What did that job last? A week? HA! I've beaten that with this semesters' work study.  My work entails streaking petri dishes with bacteria, as well as inoculating broths with said bacteria. I also make more media to put into those petri dishes. Yeah, that's more like what I do every working day Each of these tasks is a skill. Yep, a skill I've had to learn and am still learning. Yesterday's mistake was that I should've set the media I just made into the autoclave and ran it through. TOTALLY forgot about it while I was doing other stuff.  But while I'm perfecting these skills, I'm getting $9.00 an hour instead of minimum wage. So the question I always ask about a minimum wage job with minimum wage skills is this: If I can walk into your job and with about 5 minutes of 'training' DO your job, then your skills are worth minimum wage. I don't think that other people could do what I do with 5 minut...

Adventures in Minimum Wage - An Abrupt End?

So after the rant, I went in and did my Sunday work and looked at the board. I had already decided to quit the job as the hours I was getting were unworkable for more than a few days. I perhaps did not make myself clear when I said there were hours I didn't want to work. It wasn't that I didn't 'want' to work them, it's that I 'couldn't' work them. You see, my schedule is wonky, but uber-tight. If I'm not working one job, I'm either working here at home or studying. Which sounds odd, right? My day starts off at anywhere between 5 and 6 am every morning. Not 5 days a week, but every stinking morning.  I stumble down the stairs, feed snacky treats to the cats at bottom stair. Then I spritz, candle and turn eggs in the incubator. Then I dump out the bad water and give new water to the 3 baby ducks and 4 baby chickens in the laundry room. And feed them too. Then it's outside: Open the coop, let out the ducks and chickens, open the ...

Adventures in Minimum Wage - The Mini Rant

I've been a cashier for 5 days now. I've not seen the back room except to put the broom away. BUT.. here's the deal: I SAID both on my application and in person that I did not want to work Sundays, Sunday Night, Any night BEFORE class. Class is Monday Wednesday and Friday. So when does my boss schedule me for this next week? Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday 4-10 pm. I stole the meme. I mean, can't ANYONE EVER LISTEN TO ME?!?!?!?!  I don't put these exceptions down willy nilly, I NEED TO HAVE PEOPLE LISTEN TO MY SCHEDULE!!!  I get up at 5:30 .......not on some mornings, EVERY FUCKING MORNING!!  How else are chores going to get done? So yeah.. I want to work til 10, get home at 10:30.. get to bed around 11 and get to sleep around Midnight...BECAUSE 5 HOURS OF SLEEP IS KEWL!! Especially RIGHT BEFORE EXAMS!! Guess what day my quizzes + exams are in Microbiology??? FRIDAY MORNINGS AT 9:00 AM. awesome, just freaking awesome!! I get to tank qui...

Adventures in Minimum Wage, part 2

I've worked 2 days at my job. On the 2nd day as the cashier, I was doing decently, and it was almost time for shift to end.  A few young kids come in wanting to buy one of those prepaid Visa cards. They lay their cash on the table, and I enter the amount into the card.  Except.............I didn't know that the card costs $4.95.  These kids don't have that extra amount, can I just deduct it from the amount put on the card? Sure. Except that requires a transaction void, and that transaction void is over $100.  My boss has to do transaction voids. Heck, they have to do item voids...you see, there might be someone stealing from them by voiding items on  the counter...except if you have too many transaction voids (for ANY reason) you can get fired.   My boss goes into a tizzy, now a call has to be made to their immediate manager on why a transaction void of over $100 was done. I get to hear the boss bitch and moan and holler for the remainder of my shift. ...

Adventures in Minimum Wage - The Series

* This will be the first of a series of expose's on the adventure known as minimum wage work. It will not be what you expect, and that's why it will be fun to read.* So my bill came back from getting my POS truck fixed: Over $600 OUCH!~ there goes all the money in the emergency car repair fund. I mulled it over for a bit and decided to find a part time job to refill the repair fund and to pay off my credit card bill. The fun part is that my credit card bill was from having to put my tuition on the card due to the fact that the UW System refused to refund me monies from dropping out of a class that forced me to read and review a book on rape, incest and abuse. Nope, haven't forgotten about that, ol' UW! SO onto the applications. It's the usual stuff plus a part where you put down when you are available to work. This semester has me taking classes Mon-Wed-Fri from 9 to noon, so that's out. I don't want Sundays and I really want less than 1-2 nights/week...
